Ivanov met with Venizelos

President of Republic of Macedonia Gjorgje Ivanov received the Chairman of the Council of the European Union, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister of Greece, Evangelos Venizelos.



At the meeting, according to Ivanov’s office were exchanged opinions and information about the process of European integration of the Republic of Macedonia during the Greek Presidency with the European Union.

President Ivanov wished Greece successful presidency with the European Union and expressed expectation that as Chairman despite the fact that it is not in the priorities, would remain committed to policy of expansion.

President Ivanov stressed that Republic of Macedonia has seen steady progress in key reform areas, as confirmed by five consecutive recommendations for the start of accession negotiations, and that key obstacle to European integration and progress on the name issue remains.

Allowing parallel motion the process for resolving bilateral issue and the process of accession negotiations for EU membership, which proves to be successful and positive practice, if applied in our case, will be beneficial not only for Macedonia but for Greece and the entire region, noted Ivanov.

Macedonia’s President said to Minister Venizelos that the solution to the open question is possible only with strict adherence to the framework in which the process is conducted in the UN with respect to existing resolutions of the Security Council, the Interim Agreement, international law and the verdict of The Hague. “Ivanov added that uptake into the issues in the area of ​​identity and human dignity is not a part of the frame and contributes to efforts for mutually acceptable solution.

President Ivanov stressed that it is necessary to follow the example of the two societies, it is necessary to increase mutual trust, which would be achieved through frequent contacts at all levels.

- It does not suit to two neighboring European countries in the 21st century not communicate at the highest political level. Among our countries, we have huge opportunities and potential for cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, Ivanov stressed and repeated the open invitation for visit of Greek President to the Republic of Macedonia.

In the context of bilateral cooperation, Macedonian President confirmed the interest of the Republic of Macedonia to intensify economic cooperation and strengthen cross- border cooperation, suggesting that expansion of bilateral legal framework for cooperation will contribute to the advancement and political relations between the two countries.

At the meeting have been exchanged views and information about current events in the region or around the European perspective of the Western Balkans.
