United Macedonian Diaspora: Samaras still has the idea of division of Macedonia

UMD in a statement rejected the Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras assessment that Greece, not Macedonia, is the constructive side in the name dispute.

- Although UMD considers that Macedonia should not negotiate about the name dispute, Macedonia is still more constructive in the negotiations than Greece at the United Nations. We saw the actual positions of Samaras in 2008 on the Greek television, where he said that Macedonia will eventually be divided between Greater Albania and Greater Bulgaria, and Greece therefore does not have to work to resolve the name dispute, imposed on Macedonia. It is not constructive to involve Albania and Bulgaria into the Greek agenda and to impose a new name for Macedonia, said UMD President Meto Koloski.

UMD asks Samaras to stop the accusation and inciting the domestic public- faced with deep economic and political crisis, and work to resolve the name dispute.

- We point out the notion of the High Representative of the European Union, Catherine Ashton in Washington this week that the Balkan leaders should care about the future of the region. Given the need for stability in the region and the continuing process of expanding NATO and the European Union, the Greek Prime Minister will have to meet with the Macedonian Prime Minister in order to resolve the differences. UMD urges the U.S. administration to ignore the comments of the Greek Prime Minister and to set conditions for inviting Macedonia to join NATO at the summit in Britain in 2014, says Koloski.

Yesterday afternoon in Washington, Samaras met with the Vice President Joe Biden. According to a brief statement by Vice President Biden, the main topic of the meeting, despite the economic crisis in Greece, was the situation in Cyprus and Biden welcomed the initiative of Greece and Turkey to meet with negotiators on both sides of the divided island.
