Luuk van Middelaar: The Greece attitude is not fair

Luuk van Middelaar, Advisor to the President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy for the dispute between Macedonia and Greece said that because of bad experience with Cyprus, the Union wants to resolve bilateral disputes before admitting the both countries or at least one country in the EU.

According Middelaar, the use of the veto on the admission of new members in bilateral disputes is unfair and the EU could put pressure on the member states, as in the case of Slovenia.

- Union is not good at solving bilateral relations concerning boundary, name, the old world of sovereign states. Therefore, the Union as in the example of Cyprus learned on the hard way, that these issues must be resolved before one side or both sides are admitted in the EU. Same as with the famous territorial dispute between France and Germany for Saar, it was resolved with the Agreement in 1950 for joining the EU. This issue will have to be resolved before the accession of Macedonia. Probably it is not fair that one of the parties, already a member, uses its disproportionate impact. But lets look at a more positive example, the dispute between Slovenia and Croatia showed that political pressure can be placed on the country that is inside, in this case Slovenia so that she will deliver what it promised, said  van Middelaar.

Van Middelaar, a historian and columnist in the Netherlands, is a member of the Cabinet of Van Rompuy said that it is similar to the relation between Cyprus and Turkey, where Turkish Cypriots impede the Turkish negotiations for EU membership.

We soon expect the European Commission new report for Macedonia and its willingness to start negotiations. Although in the past four reports, the Commission gave this recommendation, the Greece uses its right on veto in the European Council to reverse this recommendation.
