O’Neil: Greece does not want solution to the name issue

Now it’s clear that the Greek government does not want mutually agreed solution to the so-called name issue of the Republic of Macedonia, the first negotiator in Greece-Macedonia dispute, Ambassador Robin O’Neil said on the occasion of 18th anniversary of the New York interim agreement and recent visit of the UN mediator Matthew Nimetz to Athens and Skopje.

Greece’s goal is to leave the problem unsolved forever. This means that Macedonia to stay with official name the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and to be excluded from NATO and EU, O’Neil said for the programme “Voice of the People” on TV channel Sonce.

In regard to the recent visit by the UN mediator Nimetz and his tireless work for 18 years of negotiations, he said that Greece simply used the process to get time – forever and if a negotiation process can not result in agreement for a period of 18 years it is high time to admit that it will never happen, O’Neil said.

Macedonia has the right to use the name chosen by its people. For more than 20 years the Greek authorise are trying to dictate otherwise. The time has come for them to give up doing this. Greece has never have the right to dictate the name of the Republic of Macedonia and the Macedonian government should direct this issue directly to the United Nations and to request general Assembly to accept Macedonia as member under its constitutional name, O’Neil said.

According to the US analyst Jason Miko, Greece has proven the world that it does not obey the agreements it signs.

Macedonia has proven many times that it is prepared to negotiate with good intentions. Greece must agree to the same.

Miko suggests that the country should continue with the started work – building stronger economy, civil society, media, etc. and there is no need Macedonia to be proactive or reactive.

Enough time, work and resources were spent for the cooperation with the Greeks in regard to issue without any results. Finally the name and the identity of Macedonia and Macedonia people can not be changed, unless Macedonian people want this. Macedonia remains Macedonia, US analyst Jason Miko said for the programme “Voice of the People” on TV channel Sonce.
