O'Neal: Macedonia should request UN Review, it's been 20 Years

After twenty years, period in which the name Republic of Macedonia did not cause international or domestic problems with Greece or other countries, resolution and confirmation for usage of the name should be requested from the UN, former mediator in Greek-Macedonian name dispute, Robin O’Neil said in the interview with “PORTA” programme on MTV.

O’Neil said that priority goals of the international politics of Macedonia are: to be in good relations with the neighbours, including here Greece, as well as full and equal place in the community of European countries, which means membership in the EU and NATO.

- The name of the country should not play any role in this unfortunately it isn't so, British ambassador emphasised.

He recommended providing help and support from the friends for achieving settlement for the name “it is important Macedonia to show to be reasonable, flexible and prepared for discussion in regard to the form of the solution.” Also, it will keep the issue before the members of the EU and NATO and in context to this, O’Neil said, the recent observations by the President Gjorge Ivanov for potential way in achieving two international political goals, are welcomed.

- With respect to agreement with Greece, my opinion for usage of the name Republic of Macedonia (Skopje), in 1992 was defensive solution. But Greece then refused it and it seems that is refusing it still. But it should not represent an obstacle for inexpressing preparedness by the Macedonian side for discussion, O’Neil said.

According to him, any such solution should be presented before the people of Macedonia through a referendum.

- With a hope that this only can be made only by approval and obligatory agreement by Greek side, such agreement would finally lead to end of dispute. In the opposite why Macedonian people would vote for this?, O’Neil said.

If Greece continues to refuse discussions for resolving the name dispute with Macedonia on constructive manner, Macedonia should begin in finding solution with other parties and wider for example with EU, NATO or UN.

By progressing in these spheres, the Greek government should be demonstrated that there is no use with the politics of continuous ultimatum on Macedonia, Robin O’Neil said in the interview with “PORTA” programme on MTV.
