In Wien gestohlene Luxusautos in Griechenland sichergestellt

Greek Film Makers in Uproar against Athens

Bild
A Greek bid to blackmail Swiss Film Festival backfired this weekend, after official Athens via its Ambassador in Switzerland requested films from Macedonia present at the Festival in Lugano change the country of origin using the acronym. Officials at the "Other Movie" Film Festival refused Athens' request, which resulted in the removal of 5 movies from Greece and 2 from Cyprus.  This however infuriated Greek Film Makers who worked hard on their movies to see them removed from the Swiss Festival without even being consulted by the Greek Government. Director and producer Vasilis Mazomenos was stunned. In an interview with Macedonian Kanal5 called the decision of his Government 'bizarre and fascist'. "We are working on this films for years, and we are the last to find out our movies were removed from the Festival without any sort of consultation with us.  This fascist move will need to be explained from the boss of Greek Diplomacy. When everything

Greek Political Party Leader on Name Issue

Bild
“There are OECD member-states that recognise the country as Macedonia. That is a big problem and we’ve missed a huge opportunity,” Stavros Theodorakis, the leader of the Greek political party Potami, said at an event in Serres, Greece. At the event, he was asked to comment on “Skopje’s use of the name Macedonia”. Reiterating that many countries around the world recognised Macedonia’s constitutional name, he stressed that a geographical qualifier, but not another type, was a brave political move, adding that Skopje should be pressured into accepting the name North Macedonia. According to him, Greece shouldn’t “close its eyes” because it could face the same problem with other areas in the future.

Rainbow's Papadakis elected Spokesperson for European Free Alliance

Bild
Jorgos Papadakis from Rainbow, the party of the Macedonians in Yunanistan has been appointed new director of communications with the European Free Alliance (EFA), a political group which unites more regional, progressive parties and the parties of the minorities in the European Union, reads Telegraf.mk. Papadakis has confirmed that from early January he would work in Brussels and his job would be to communicate with MEPs and the Brussels administration. "This appointment is good for Rainbow as a political Party, and my task will be to provide higher visibility of the smaller groups so to be more represented in the media", explains Papadakis. EFA along with the Greens has 50 MEPs, and according to the Declaration of 2000, it advocates for “Europe of the free citizens based on the principle of subsidiary and solidarity of citizens." Party membership includes parties from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Germany, the UK and many other

Macedonians in Greece Join SYRIZA to Find Work

Bild
The village mayor of Ovcarani, Gjorgi Javramov, says that Macedonians in Greece are increasingly seeking membership in SYRIZA because they will easier find employment through this party, which is a certain winner of the next elections, Telegraf.mk reports. Javramov, who became head of the village through membership in SYRIZA on the last local elections, said that the situation in Greece is difficult, but it’s even harder if you're a member of a minority that the government does not recognize. “People here are poor and life is hard. They seek salvation by joining some party and SYRIZA is the first choice. The fact that many of them visit Bitola regularly to purchase groceries and to look for work speak volumes about the condition of the people in Ovcharani. They often have problems on the way back with the border police that inquire them why they go to Macedonia,” Javramov says.

Tierkrankheiten dezimieren Herden in Griechenland

Bild

Greece Third among '12 Countries that Hate Their Government Most'

According to the Huffington Post's recently published Gallup survey of the "12 Countries that Hate Their Government Most", Greece ranks third, just behind Bosnia and Herzegovina and Bulgaria, the Greek Reporter has learnt. "In many countries, lawmakers and their governments are quite unpopular. U.S. President Barack Obama’s approval rating sank to 42% in October from over 65% when he was elected into office, according to Gallup. However, Obama still looks exceptionally popular in contrast to some governments’ approval ratings. The government of Bosnia and Herzegovina, for instance, had the world’s lowest approval rating, at just 8%. Based on Gallup’s study "Global States of Mind 2014" released at the Meridian Global Leadership Summit, these are the countries that hate their government most," the article reads.

Theodorakis: The Problem Is that Many Countries Have Recognized Macedonia under Its Constitutional Name

Bild
There are OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) member-countries that have recognized the country as Macedonia. It is a big problem and we missed a huge opportunity, said the leader of the Greek party Potami, Stavros Theodorakis. Theodorakis, whose party is the third political force in Greece, attended the event in Serres, where he was asked to comment the fact that "Skopje uses the name Macedonia." Recalling that many countries of the world have recognized Macedonia under its constitutional name, Theodorakis said that a geographical qualifier, is a bold political move and that pressure should be exercised over Skopje to accept the name "Northern Macedonia".

Why Do Young Greeks Vote for Golden Dawn?

Bild
According to research conducted by the sociology department of Athens’s Panteion University, the Greek youth who voted for Golden Dawn in the 2012 elections consider themselves nationalists reads Greekreporter.com.  In general, they espouse their love for Greece above everything, loathe the labels “fascist” and “neonazi,” and insist on being called patriots. Head researcher Alexandra Koroneou said that, “the widely used argument that young people turn to Golden Dawn because they are poor is not accurate. The survey shows that there are other factors that make Golden Dawn appeal to some young people.”

Griechenland droht erneute Staatspleite

Was ist da passiert?

PARTY ‘’ INDEPENDENT GREEKS’’ REPEATED THE EXTREME POSITION ON MACEDONIA’S NAME

Bild
Greek opposition party Independent Greeks expressed "great concern" for "flexibility" of the Government in regard to the name of Macedonia, MIA reports from Athens.  . - It seems that Greece has significantly lost what was constructed so many years, even with the veto of Constantine Karamanlis in NATO. Foreign Minister proposed a mutually acceptable composite name with a geographical qualifier before the word Macedonia. You gave to Skopje the official name of Macedonia? Greek fixed positions are that our country would not recognize the name of Skopje which has the word Macedonia and its derivatives, and it should be applied, " lawmaker of Independent Greeks said, Maria Kollia Tsaroucha. Tsaroucha said this during last night's debate in the Greek Parliament ahead of the vote of confidence in the government. Although it was expected more MPs to discuss the name issue, Greek lawmakers had no time for mutual accusations regarding the economic

GREEK MEDIA: WITH KURZ’S STATEMENT ON MACEDONIA, AUSTRIA OPENED NEW FRONT WITH GREECE

Bild
Almost all Greek media reported the statement by Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz who asked the Council of the EU to abandon the blockade of Macedonia, MIA.  Entitled "Austrian Foreign Ministry complained of Greece", "Austria presses for Skopje", "Provocation by the Austrian Foreign Minister," Greek media transferred the statement of Kurz to the European Commission report on the progress of the Western Balkans. - Unfortunately my fears were confirmed. Continuous blockade of the accession negotiations with Macedonia, caused by the unresolved name dispute with Greece, puts into question the already achieved results. In long term it can lead to destabilization of the entire region. Therefore I call on the Council to lift the blockade on the issue, Kurz asked.

Greek Media: Austria Exerts Pressure in Support of Skopje

In headlines citing "The Austrian Foreign Ministry Makes Complaint on Greece", "Austria Exerts Pressure in Support of Skopje", "Provocation Coming from Austria's Foreign Minister", Greek media have transmitted Sebastian Kurz's statement on the EC report on the progress of Western Balkan countries. "The continuous blockage of the opening of accession talks for Macedonia due to the unsolved name dispute puts the already achieved results in question. In the long run, it could destabilize the entire region. Therefore, I call on the European Council to finally lift the blockade," Kurz said.

“Eleftherotypia”: Nimetz will offer new version of the name

Bild
Mediator Matthew Nimetz in the coming weeks to Athens and Skopje will present new proposal for possible solution to the name issue, writes MIA. This was reported by the Greek newspaper “Eleftherotypia”, citing “reliable sources” at the United Nations in New York. “What will brought Nimitz, perhaps before the end of October, will be package of proposals that will include new version of the name, and many other topics irredentism, language etc.,” the newspaper reported. Ironically, adding that as foreign minister is busy with other critical issues such as the party, the burden of this national issue will fall on already “encumbered, but relentless, Prime Minister…” If the information by the UN is correct, according to the “Eleftherotypia” Samaras very soon will have to face the issue of Macedonia’s name, which obviously will have impact on developments in domestic politics, which at this stage is monopolized by problems associated with economy and hunting for votes of el

moma-Reporter: Jugendarbeitslosigkeit in Griechenland

VIDEO CLIP HIER ANSEHEN

Reactions after Venizelos Speech at UN General Assembly Still Loud in Greece

Greek politicians are still dealing with the speech of Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos to the UN General Assembly in which he acknowledged the well-known position of Greece over Macedonia's name. As MIA Athens reported, this time Christian Democratic Party leader Nikos Nikolopoulos publicly spoke saying "Venizelos recognized Skopje under the name Macedonia". According to Nikolopoulos, by saying that the attitude of "Greece is a composite name with a geographic qualifier before the word Macedonia, for all purposes," Venizelos "threw a bomb, creating a dangerous precedent, and flipped the existing positions that Greece will not recognize a name that includes the term Macedonia ".

Kathimerini: Belgium Diplomats Pressure Greece over Macedonia

Greece is under increasing pressure from some of its European Union partners to relent, and allow Macedonia to open negotiations to join the EU without insisting on a name change, the Greek daily Kathimerini reports. According to the quoted Greek sources, one of these countries is Belgium, whose diplomats have begun to send "alarming messages" to Greece over Macedonia. “The reason for concern is particularly high given that the European Commission is expected to publish the Progress Report for Macedonia. The report is expected to include a recommendation to open the negotiations, as it has every year since 2009. The European Council has always rejected this recommendation,” Kathimerini writes.

A new feature in Greek politics: Archaeology

Bild
I have just returned from a holiday to my home country, where the horror of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) seems remote and where people have been immersed in a heated debate over the historical past and contemporary politics.  A few of you may have heard the name of Amphipolis. But for the Greeks, this once-famous ancient port known for its gold and silver resources has become more than just a ruined ancient city in the center of Greek Macedonia. For Greeks, still struggling to cope with impossible economic hardship and an uncertain future, it has become the utopian land of their grandiose ancient past, which produced world heroes like Alexander the Great. After all, it was from the port of Amphipolis that the fleet of the ancient Macedonian king launched its conquests. There was a strong reason why most Greeks were brought into a perpetual dream-like state and temporarily put aside their real life problems.   During this summer’s excavations at a burial

Recovery? 60% of Greeks Live at or Below Povery Line

Bild
While greek government yields (and political leaders) proclaim the troubled peripheral European nation is 'recovering', the risk of major political upheaval in Greece has not gone away ahead of next year's presidential vote. As Reuters notes, under growing pressure from anti-bailout leftists,  Prime Minister Antonis Samaras desperately needs a new narrative to get the backing of lawmakers and rally greeks fed up with four years of austerity. We wish him luck as "Keep Talking Greece notes", it is high time that the real data of the economic situation of the greeksociety come to the surface and so it did this week. A report from Athens' State Budget Office found that three in every five greeks, or some 6.3 million people, were living in poverty or under the threat of poverty in 2013 due to material deprivation and unemployment. As we noted previously, poverty rates are disturbing in Greecen.
