No Climate in Greece for Macedonian Membership in NATO

Macedonian ministers of foreign affairs and defense underscored Friday at the meeting with the ambassadors of NATO members that Macedonia is prepared to join the largest military and political organization in the world expecting to receive an invitation at the upcoming NATO summit in Wales. However, Nikola Poposki and Zoran Jolevski both noted that there was neither climate nor readiness in Greece -the only NATO country that has been blocking Macedonia's NATO membership since 2008 – to allow the country to join the Alliance, MIA reports from Brussels. Ministers Poposki and Jolevski - the latter in his first official visit since taking office - attended in Brussels the annual meeting between Macedonia and the NATO North Atlantic Council at ambassadorial level as part of the 15th cycle of the Membership Action Plan (MAP). On World Refugee Day, the United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) commemorates the 70th anniversary since the plight and mass exodus of thousands of Macedonian children, called “Deca Begalci,” that were forcefully expelled by Greek army forces during the Greek Civil War, which started in 1944 and lasted till 1949. UMD calls upon Greece to recognize the inhumane treatment of these Macedonians by demanding the repeal of the Amnesty Law enacted in 1982 that intends to repatriate only “Greeks by genus,” as well as the law enacted in 1985 designed to return confiscated properties only to “Greeks by genus.” Since the annexation of Aegean Macedonia by Greece under the 1913 Treaty of Bucharest, Macedonians in Greece who spoke out against their persecution have been exiled, imprisoned, harassed, neglected, silenced, discriminated against and have had their properties confiscated; all committed either by or with the acquiescence of the Greek Government and the Greek Orthodox Church. Former Foreign Minister: Greece Delays Name Dispute to Postpone Macedonia's Accession to EU

Greece sees the name dispute settlement not as the main goal, but as a delay of the country’s accession in the international organizations, says Former Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki. “On one occasion, Former Greek Chief of Diplomacy Dora Bakoyiannis told me that the position of official Athens is such that they would undertake all steps and actions to prevent Macedonia from joining the EU before Serbia”, says Milososki in Sunday’s interview with Radio Free Europe. Milososki believes no solution can be found before the NATO Summit due to the lack of time, since serious and regular consultations would be required. “A high level dialogue between Macedonia and Greece is one of the prerequisites for reaching a solution but there is a lack of enthousiasm on the part of Greece. Neither the Greek Prime Minister nor the Foreign Minister and the president have shown preparedness for a thete a tete dialogue with Maceodnian counterparts, which does not facilitate the situat
