Former Un Mediator: Macedonia should request to be entered in UN under its name

Today, on the 21st anniversary of the accession to the United Nations, it is important, more than ever, that Macedonia is allowed to be registered under its constitutional name - the Republic of Macedonia, Robin O'Neill, the first mediator in the name dispute, told the "Voice of the People".

O'Neill says Greece has blocked Macedonia for 21 years, refusing to seriously negotiate over an alternative name, holding the dispute open despite the numerous attempts by the UN envoy to settle the row.

"Greece is very well aware that Macedonia will be eventually accepted and recognized under its constitutional name by international law, so it acts tactically in order to delay this as much as possible," says O'Neill.

According to the former mediator, the Macedonian Government should demand to be registered by the United Nations under its constitutional name, adding that Greece's position will not be jeopardized by this decision, since an overwhelming number of UN member-states have already accepted the country under its name.

"If Greece accepted Macedonia in NATO and the EU under the interim reference, there would be no need of addressing the UN at this point. After the country is listed as Republic of Macedonia, NATO and EU member-states can no longer refuse to accept the country under its name," Ambassador O'Neill is decisive.
