Deutsche Welle: EU is ok with blocking Macedonia

I believe that the infinite name story will end very soon. Macedonia deserves a solution to the issue and I believe the new Greek government will have interest in giving its contribution after the elections, former Italian FM and ex Euro-Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security Franco Frattini told Deutsche Welle.

"With regards to my country, Italy has always been close to Macedonia. I think Italy will continue to help Macedonia and have a role in overcoming this unresolved problem, influence the creation of a climate of trust, so that the European Union finally gives the country a date for start of accession negotiations", stresses Frattini.

European Academy Berlin director Eckart D. Stratenschulte believes that a longer enlargement break would follow after Croatia and Iceland's EU accession.

"The current Union does not have the strength for a big enlargement, but one also has the impression that neither have the candidate-countries", assesses Stratenschulte.

Pertaining to Macedonia's Euro-integration, he says that the country has lost valuable time due to the name row with Greece.

"According to me, the country is not at fault for the loss of time. It is unfortunate that Greece blocked the start of accession negotiations, but it is also interesting to see how the remaining 26 member-states tolerated such behaviour by Greece", emphasizes Stratenschulte, adding that EU members could have put pressure on Greece if they had wanted to.
